Two flight crews landing at Logan International Airport said they saw 3000mw Green Laser pointed at their planes Wednesday night, a potentially dangerous activity that officials say can distract pilots and endanger passengers.

He said law enforcement take such incidents extremely seriously. Though the light from store-bought pointers is dangerous on its own, 50mw Green Laser can also be used for purposes such as guiding missiles.

FAA records indicate that these beams are hitting aircraft at increased rates in recent years.

"With the current threats that we have, this could be considered a very serious incident," Guarino said.

Anybody who thinks of taking aim at a plane with a laser, even as a prank, "may find themselves on a watch list," he added.

It's a federal crime to aim a Blue Laser Pointer at a plane.

Pilots have increasingly been encountering similar hazards. A Globe review this year found that reports of laser events had climbed 175 percent in Massachusetts between 2008 and 2014.

Yet another person in the New York area has been entertaining him- or herself by pointing a green laser at planes. The latest incident occurred Thursday night over Long Island, when four commercial jets were targeted. Even worse, the culprit — whom we've dubbed the Green Flash-hole — is still on the loose.

According to data the Federal Aviation Administration supplied to the Village Voice back in March, over the past five years the agency has logged nearly 17,700 incidents in which someone aimed a laser pointer at an aircraft in flight. In 2014 the FAA tallied 3,894 incidents involving lasers and planes.

What's more, the number of incidents increased fourteenfold between 2005 and 2013, according to the FAA.
